Birchwood, Minnesota

John Brian McCormick

Age 69, of Birchwood, passed away unexpectedly March 13. Preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Florence Steinkelner McCormick. Survived by his wife of forty years, Bridget Sperl; daughters Clare and Sheila McCormick; son Jack McCormick; son-in-law Ben Kloesel; grandchildren Luke and Amalia Kloesel; sisters Kathleen Wieting and Christine McCormick; brother Dennis McCormick; and many nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Green Bay, WI, John graduated from Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin Madison Law School. A dedicated public servant, he practiced law in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He joined the City Attorney’s office in St. Paul, where he rose to Deputy City Attorney. He retired in 2012.

John will be remembered by all who knew him for his positive approach to life, his quick wit, his outgoing personality, his eagerness to help anyone who needed help, and for his deep and abiding love for his family. John was always fun to be around, whether he was at the family cabin in Wisconsin, laughing with friends around the backyard grill, on a duck hunting expedition with his brothers-in-law, or picking tomatoes with his grandchildren in the garden. He had an unwavering allegiance to the Green Bay Packers and attended many games at Lambeau Field. He was also a season ticket holder for the Minnesota Twins.

In recent years John and his wife Bridget traveled the world. John could turn a stranger into a close friend in an instant, and his spirit lives on in the hearts of his family and those who knew him.
